Sept 1 - 16

Nairobi

This component of the program include lectures, 20 hrs of Kiswahili language training and 4-day excursion to Mombasa. Housing will be at the Kopling Guest House.

General Culture students will define their independent study projects, begin plans for implementing the project, and complete a short position paper on their topic of choice.

Biology students will exploit some of Professor Clifton's old contacts in Nairobi: National Museum, Kenya Wildlife Service, local conservation agencies, etc. and begin exploring ISP topics

Terrestrial & Marine Ecology Units with Professor Clifton

October 30 - November 28

 

 

The group reconvenes

Includes a course on Urban East Africa with excursion to Mombasa, continued Kiswahili study, completion of ISP, Nairobi homestay and community work project (Mukuru schools, AIDS education or shelters for street children).

Begins with independent travel for students returning to Nairobi: October 30-November 4

Includes course work and continued field studies of ecological pattern in grassland habitats, Umusabarra mountains (east of Mt Kilimanjaro), and marine communities.

Begins in north-central Tanzania

Five days of independent travel (from Arusha) included about half-way through the program

November 29 - December 1

Program retreat at Lake Naivasha. Both groups will give final presentations
