Chile/DRPrograms Pack List

Here's a checklistof suggestions to help you with your pre-trippreparation.

LUGGAGE: Travel Light!

You will be carrying your own luggage, sometimes for considerable distances, so it is important to choose lightweight yet sturdy luggage. A soft-sided suitcase that converts to a backpack is versatile, functional, and easy to handle in crowds. An internal frame pack is good, too, especially if you will be traveling after the program. A regular suitcase is fine, and is good when combined with a day pack for carrying journal, a book, your camera, sweater, and a toothbrush. As a matter of fact, everyone should have a smaller bag for weekend field trips and short excursions.

A fanny pack is better than a purse for carrying money, credit cards, and other valuables. Having your stuff stolen is a miserable experience (and it happens!), so it is a good idea to keep these items close to you and carry them inconspicuously.

You won't need a sleeping bag unless you plan to travel "off the beaten path" after the program. Even then you may not want to deal with it. Talk with students who have traveled before you to see what they recommend.

You will be packing for two or three seasons, so plan to layer clothing to get the most out of what you take. Clothes are expensive in Chile, but you can find sweaters and other non-imported items fairly cheaply.

Use this checklist to help in packing clothing, toiletries, documents, gifts, and other personal items. Remember: Only YOU know what reflects your lifestyle and taste, and only YOU know what you can't live without, so use these as suggestions:
