International Students’ and Scholars’ Tax Workshop

April 20, 2015

The 21st year of the Lewis & Clark International Students’ and Scholars’ Tax Workshop has reached the finished line!  The filing deadline for most taxpayers – April 15 – saw many dozens of international students and scholars at Lewis & Clark College satisfying their U.S. tax filing responsibilities with the help of law school volunteers.  The issues that some of our foreign visitors encountered were as complex as ever, and the volume of customers for the workshop remained at record-high levels.  Once again, I made a heartfelt plea in the national journal Tax Notes for simplification of international students’ tax situations – but there’s no sign of any relief from Congress or the Internal Revenue Service.

In a month or two, some international students will receive the usual notices from the IRS Service Center in Austin, Texas, requiring more paperwork.  Some may even be audited.  When the notices arrive, the workshop will be open and ready to assist.  And in the fall, a large handful of students who have been studying abroad – and who have received extensions of time – will receive needed return preparation help at the law school.  Charity begins at home!  Thanks to everyone who helped with this year’s effort.
